Week 4 Notes Homework and videos

NEW NOTES FOR THIS WEEK:

NOTE 1:   I WOULD STILL DO SIT ON THE DOG.  I MAY WANT TO SEE HOW LONG IT TAKES FOR AVA TO SETTLE ON SHORT SANDS ON OUR POSSIBLE NEXT OR 6TH LESSON.

NOTE 2:  EVERYTHING (EXCEPT MAYBE PLACE BUT WE MAY DO THAT LATER) CAN BE DONE ON WALKS NOW.   YOU WANT THE WALK TO BE CHALLENGING BUT NOT OVERLY CHALLENGING.   SOMETIMES I WILL GO TO A DOG PARK NOT TO WORK IN THE PARK BUT TO WORK OUTSIDE OF THE FENCED AREA FOR INSTANCE.  YOU CAN USUALLY CATCH DOGS AT OGUNQUIT DOG PARK.   THERE IS ONE IN YORK NOW, BUT I HAVE NOT BEEN THERE YET.

NOTE 3:  SINCE THE "LET'S GO" COMMAND IS NEW, I WOULD CONCENTRATE IN THE YARD (OR IN THE HOUSE) WITH HER ON LONG LINE.  DON'T TAKE THE LONG LINE OFF, BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO GIVE HER A TUG CORRECTION IF SHE DOES NOT WALK TOWARDS YOU.

NOTE 4:  NOW THERE WILL BE TIME GOALS TO MEET FOR WORKING OUTSIDE AND ON WALKS WITH THE COMMANDS USED.

Behavioral Calming Exercises (remember that you rotate these on opposite days):

  1. Sit on the Dog 30+ minutes  (you could do this as part of your walk) Goal:  To have Ava lay all the way down within 5 minutes in more distracting places.   Week 4 Change:   If your yard is too easy for Ava, then do this during a portion of your walk.   For instance, on Long Sands, I will use either the picnic benches near the bathhouse or the new, stepped wall that was recently built.  You don't need to be very close to any particular dogs.   You want her to start to feel comfortable and less "on alert" there if she sees them from a distance.   At Ellis Park at Short Sands, I might use the benches under the gazebo, away from the beach (not the gazebo right on the walking path next to the beach).  Note:  I sometimes take a stick with me just in case, if I am worried a dog might run up to me despite my best efforts to avoid them.  Also at the Nubble, there are benches away from the hub bub (I think).  NOTE:  THE VIDEO IS A DOG NAMED BIRDIE, AND I WOULD NOT WORK AVA THIS CLOSE.  I WOULD BE IN ON THE PICNIC TABLES OR DO THIS ON ELLIS PART AT SHORT SANDS.

  2. Long Place 30 minutes Goal:   To be able to stay there further away from you (using the long line) in the yard.  Extra points for working it until you can drop the 6' leash in the yard and keep her there.  Week 4 Change:  Use a long line and have Ava place outside in the yard.   This is a video of Knox to give you an idea of what it looks like and what I am looking for.  You won't have the doggie distractions in your yard, of course.

Obedience Exercises:

  1. (NEW) Let's Go Command 5-10 minutes Goal:  To get 3 sets of 4 in a row "Let's Go" command without needing to give the tug correction.  The time goal for this will be less than 5 minutes to get there outside in the fenced yard environment.

  2. (ADVANCED)  Attention in Distractions 5 minutes or less Goal:  To get three sets of 4 in a row "attention to name" in an outside distracting area or on a walk.   Time Goal will be less than 2 minutes.  Week 4 change is the the addition of distractions.   Keep the distractions a little challenging but not too challenging.  NOTE:  THE VIDEO OF AVA DID NOT COME OUT, SO THIS IS SHARPIE.  YOU WILL JUST BE WORKING AVA OUTSIDE INSTEAD OF HAVING A PACK OF DOGS AROUND YOU.

  3. (ADVANCED) Sits First Command 10 minutes or less Goal:  To get three sets of 4 in a row sits at the first command without verbal or collar corrections in a distracting outside location or on your walk.   Time Goal will be less than 3 minutes.  Week 4 change is just changing the distraction to outside in your yard or on your walks.

  4. (ADVANCED) Circle Sit stay 7 minutes or less Goal:  To get 4 in a row for one minute with the leash dropped in your house or yard (leash on with you holding it on walks).  You can also set Ava up on the long line in your yard or tentatively on the beach on either the 6' or 15' leash (be careful and responsible with that).  Don't make it too hard for her but challenge her.   Time Goal is 5 minutes or less.  If you are walking a lot in between it, it will be longer.   Just remember if you get 4 in a row off the bat, then you met your goal. Week 4 Change is to drop the leash inside (outside of your property keep the leash on and circle or bring the long line to an area where you can do that safely).

  5. (SMALL CHANGE)  Lured Heeling Step 1 OR Lured Heel Step 2 10 minutes or less   Goal:  If you can do 3 session of 4 short (in steps) heel in a row with auto sit,  in less than about 7 minutes in challenging but not too challenging distractions.   Week 4 Change: I know you are practicing this on your walk.   Make it a little challenging but not too challenging (like maybe working it on the beach carefully and safely)NOTE:  WE DID NOT PRACTICE THIS SO THIS IS BAILEY SHOWING WHAT IT WOULD IDEALLY LOOK LIKE.  YOU CAN START THIS ON THE FIRST STEP OF LURED HEEL (HOLDING THE TREAT IN FRONT OF HER NOSE, IF THAT MAKES IT EASIER FOR YOU TO START).

  6. (SMALL CHANGE) Send to Place 7 minutes or less Goal:  To get three sets of four in a row send to places without any verbal or physical corrections (body bumps or leash tugs) in more distractions (like your fenced in yard). Time goal is going to be 3 minutes or less.  Week 4 Change:  To work on this outside with Ava on either the 6' or 15' leash.  Only use the 15' leash if you can complete the goal on the six-foot leash.  THE VIDEO IS OF KANE SINCE WE DID NOT GET A CHANCE TO PRACTICE THIS.

  7. (ADVANCED) Circle Place 10 minutes or less Goal:  To get four in a row of one minute circle place (or just walking from a distance) with the leash dropped (6' leash for inside and 15' leash for outside).  Week 4 Change:   Now we are going to drop the leash inside and outside (in the fenced in area, holding the line if you are off property) while doing this exercise.
