Week 2 [INFORMATIONAL ONLY] Working with the Transitional Leash
PART 1 WALK AND SIT WITH ME (NO COMMANDS) ON LEASH:
NOTE: BECAUSE THIS IS A BEHAVIORAL EXERCISE, COMMANDS ARE NOT USED.
STEP 1: Make sure you put the transitional leash on correctly for handling your dog with the nose loop on and the safety attached to his collar.
STEP 2: You can either start walking or start your dog off in a relaxed sit, and then start walking.
STEP 3A: In the very beginning, I stop at the first pressure the dog puts on the leash. Also in the beginning you usually need to pull up on the leash to get them to sit. Once the dog relaxes, I will walk again until the next time.
STEP 3B: When the dog has a handle on this concept, I may pull back slightly with my hand on the leash if I feel tension, but the dog is doing pretty okay. Then I make up either paces or objects to which I will stop and practice the sit portion of the exercise. If your dog is really pulling, I will just stop, see if he sits, but within 1 Mississippi (1 proper second) I will pull up if he does not. I will wait until the dog calms down and is sitting, and then commence walking again. Once we get going, I do sometimes utilize a more business like hurried walk to move the dog past items of worry.
STEP 4: Work this for 15 minutes or so (or a entire longer walk if you like). The goal is to have to less pressure until there is no pressure, or for the dog to know to keep the leash loose and sit when you come to a stop.
PART 2 FIXED SPACE:
STEP 1: Change the leash to a slip lead configuration without the nose loop
STEP 2: Walk your dog to a cot or place an object against the wall.
STEP 3: Position your dog so they are standing on the cot or a place object.
STEP 4: Undo the nose portion of the transitional leash to make it just a slip leash.
STEP 5: You will be holding the leash at first, and blocking your dog with your body if they try and step off the cot or a place object.
STEP 6: You can practice this for 15 minutes at first, but when the time is done, you still have one more step.
STEP 7: For five minutes, massage the dog while they are on the cot or a place object with a deep tissue massage.
STEP 8: At the end of the massage, walk away with the leash in your hand and say nothing. The expectation is that your dog knows how to follow you.
PART 3 UNFIXED SPACE:
STEP 1: The leash should be configured as a basic slip lead.
STEP 2: Select an area in your house that you want off limits to the dog. Be sure it has an obvious boundary (whether that is furniture in the area or a visible divider, or even a rug there or a door/foyer).
STEP 3: Be sure you have taken your dog out of the area before you start.
STEP 4: In the beginning, you are going to want to be in the "forbidden area".
STEP 5: The moment your dog steps into the "forbidden area," you are going to walk them back until they go into a sit or down on their own from your spatial pressure.
STEP 6: Continue this for 15 minutes or more if you like.
