Week 3 Notes, Homework, and Video

NEW NOTES:

NOTE 1:  WORK WITH DISTRACTIONS LIKE YOUTUBE AUDIO RECORDINGS, POSSIBLY OUTSIDE IN YOUR YARD, IF YOU HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFUL MEETING THE GOAL  INSIDE.

DOG BARKING AUDIO

KITCHEN NOISE AUDIO

DOOR KNOCKING AUDIO

VEHICLE NOISES AUDIO

DOOR OPENING AND CLOSING AUDIO

NOTE 2:  IF YOU HAVE ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE STAY EXERCISES AND DISTRACTIONS, YOU CAN REDUCE THE TIME AND THEN BUILD IT UP AGAIN.  PROBLEMS USUALLY INDICATE THAT YOU HAVE INCREASED THE TIME (OR DISTANCE) TO QUICKLY.

NOTE 3:  YOU CAN USE ATTENTION TO NAME WITH HEELING AND POSSIBLY SIT (IF YOU ARE LOSING YOUR DOG'S ATTENTION).  FOR NOW, IT IS JUST A LOOK INTO YOUR EYES, NOT A PROLONGED LOOK INTO YOUR EYES BEYOND ONE SECOND.

Homework Schedule:

Calming Exercises (NOTE:  ROTATE "SIT ON THE DOG" AND "LONG PLACE" ON ALTERNATE DAYS):

  1. (CHANGE SMALL) Sit on the Dog 30 + minutes Goal:  To get your dog to lay down on their own steam in five minutes or under. Week 3 Change:  Use audio distractions inside or possibly in a fenced yard as a distraction.

  2. (CHANGE SMALL) Long Place 30 minutes Goal:  Just to get your dog start to get used to staying on the place.  If your dog manages to step off, you do not need to reset the exercise.   Week 3 Change:  Use audio distractions, or possibly in a fenced yard, as a distraction.

Obedience Exercises:
  1. (CHANGED) Lured Heel Step 2  5-10 minutes  Goal:  To get three sessions of 4 patterns (heel and sit) in a row.  Week 3 Change: This is still in a non-distracting environment, but now put the food reward behind your back with your arm bent.

  2. (NEW) Attention to Name  5 minutes or less  Goal:  To get three sets of four in a row without needing to repeat your dog's name after 10 seconds.

  3. (CHANGED)  Circle Sit Stays 5-10 minutes (once you get to 1 minute, it should be about 5-7 minutes to make your goal) Goal:  To be able to get 4 circle sit stays in a row for 1 minute OR less if you get dizzy.  You could also work these with a non circling command in between (like heel or send to place)

  4. (POSSIBLE CHANGE) Send to Place  7+ minutes Goal:  To get your dog to step on themselves for times in a row for 3 sets Week 3 POSSIBLE Change:   Start sending Ava from further away, starting at stopping one foot from the place, and then increasing the distance until you can send her across the room.  You can use food rewards given after she is on her place and you return to her first.  Use the marker words "Good" when you return to her and then "Yes" to release and indicate food reward is coming.  NOTE:  WE DID NOT PRACTICE THIS

  5. (POSSIBLE CHANGE) Circle Place 10 minutes or less Goal:  To eventually get 4 in a row without needing correction for 1 minute.  Week 3 Change:  Increase circle width so that you can walk around the place a little at a time until you have the 6' leash out.   Then you can switch to the 15' leash.  If you get dizzy, when the distance grows, you can do less of a circle, and also a wide circle is less likely to make you dizzy. NOTE:  WE DID NOT PRACTICE THIS
